저는 오늘 울산에서 활발히 활동하는 지역 작가이자,
2024 울산광역시 남구 문화예술창작촌인
장생포 아트스테이 입주작가로 선정되어
활발하게 활동중인 고예나 소설가님을 만나고 왔습니다.
고예나 소설가님과 만나 나눈
많은 이야기를 한번 들어볼까요?^^
Q. 안녕하세요. 고예나 소설가님 자기소개 부탁드립니다.
A. 2008년 <마이짝퉁라이프>로
오늘의 작가상을 수상하고 데뷔한 소설가 고예나입니다.
Q. 문학을 시작하게 된 계기가 있으실까요?
A. 어렸을 때부터 글쓰기를 좋아해서 일기를 미리 쓰는 타입이었어요.
막연하게 생각하다가 문예창작학과에 입학하게 되면서
문학을 접했습니다.
Q. 지역에서 작가로 산다는 것은 어떤가요?
A. 일단 지방의 인구가 적어서
무언가 해보려고 해도 위험부담이 있습니다.
소규모 책방이나 관련 문화공간 등
다양성이 협소하다 보니
실험하기가 어려운 점이 있어요.
하지만 그만큼 지자체에서 개성 있는 작가들이
활동할 여건을 많이 만들어 주십니다.
이번에 울산남구 예술창작촌 창작스튜디오131에 입주하게 된 것도
지역 예술가의 혜택을 본 경우입니다.
Q. 울산남구 예술창작촌(장생포 아트스테이)은
어떤 계기로 입주하게 되셨나요?
A. 올해 초 공고를 보고 결정했습니다.
숙박형이 있고 출퇴근 형이 있는데,
6,7,8월에 실제 입주 기간이라 아직 생활은 못했어요.
하지만 입주자 O.T가 있어서 가봤는데,
무엇보다 울산문학가들의 교류가 좋았고
갇힌 공간에서 글을 쓸 수 있어서 좋았습니다.
제가 처음 데뷔할 때 글을 쓰려고
고시원을 잡아서 써본 경험이 있어서 그런지
딱 글에 집중할 수 있는 공간이어서
그곳에서 차기작을 쓸 예정입니다.
Q. 내 인생의 주인공은 나이지만 우리는 종종 잊고 살아가고 있는데요,
작가님의 소설을 보면 주인공의 조건이 있는데,
소설 속 주인공들은 어떤 공통점이 있나요?“
A. 첫째, 힘들어요. 소설 속 주인공들은 늘 힘든 일을 당합니다.
위기와 시련이 항상 찾아온다면 여러분 주인공 감입니다.
둘째, 지지하는 조력자가 있어요.
주인공 옆에는 주인공을 도와주는 사람이
꼭 있기 마련입니다.
혼자서 주인공 되는 거 아니죠~
셋째부터 다섯째 까지는 북토크에 직접 오시는 독자분들께
제가 알려드릴게요 ^^
Q. 소설가들은 퇴고를 많이 한다고 하던데 퇴고가 힘들지는 않았는지요?
A. 에필로그를 엄청 많이 고쳤습니다.
소설을 쓰다가 막히면 해운대 바다를 보러 갔는데
그때 엘시티가 건설 중이라 갈 때마다 건물이 높아지더라고요.
그 모습이 내 소설 쓰기의 부진과 비교되어 힘들었습니다.
하지만 주인공의 다섯 번째 조건이 나아가야 한다는 것입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 계속해서 쓰는 것을 선택했습니다.
Q. 소설 속 주인공은 위기와 시련에 힘든 시기를 겪는다고 하셨는데,
소설을 쓰면서 실패한 인생에 관심이 갔나요?
A. 원래 소설가가 꿈이었는데,
대학에 가서 재능 있는 문창과 학생들을 보고
좌절하고 일찍 포기했었습니다.
그런데 1년쯤 직장 생활을 해보니
내가 가야 할 길이 이 길이 아닌 것 같더라고요.
그래서 포기할 거면 ‘해보고 안되더라’라고 말해보고자
고시원에 들어가 작업을 했고,
운이 좋게도 첫 작품으로 <오늘의 작가상>을 받으며
데뷔할 수 있었습니다.
Q. 앞으로의 계획이 있으시다면?
A. 차기작에 바다생물이 나와서 장생포에 머물며
글을 쓰다 보면 많은 영감을 받을 것 같습니다.
장생포를 배경으로 작업을 할 예정이고
올해 집필하여 내년에 퇴고한다면
2년 뒤에 작품을 낼 수 있지 않을까 생각합니다.
고예나 소설가님은 이번 역사소설 “경성브라운”이라는 소설으로
역사 속 숨은 이야기를 해주시기 위해
지난 4월 14일 일요일 북토크를 개최하여
독자들과의 만남의 시간을 가졌는데요.
저도 오늘 독자로서 북토크에 참여하였는데,
유튜브 <고작가의 휴먼레코드>로 활동하고 계시는
역사 스토리텔러로서
무척 입담이 좋기로 유명하신만큼
오늘 북토크에도 역사 속 숨은 이야기와 함께
재미있는 시간을 보냈습니다.
고예나 소설가님은 울산남구 문화예술창작촌의 지원을 받아
차기작을 준비하신다고합니다.
남구 청년작가로 활동하는 고예나 소설가의 다음 작품도
몹시 기다려집니다.
